The project started from the translation of El libro de los seres imaginarios by Jorge Luis Borges and Margarita Guerrero into Estonian.
This text is a fascinating material for visual representations for several reasons.
First, although Borges’s texts tend to be very logocentric, this one is more prone (or more accessible) to visual imaging, probably since in its majority the book is based on mythological creatures that often have had strong visual presence in culture. This is manifested also by the fact that already the first version of the book published under the title El libro de los seres imaginarios (Kier, 1967) was illustrated – it had wonderful illustrations in pop-expressionist style by Argentinian book illustrator Silvio Badessari. And there is also an illustrated version in English with illustrations by Peter Sis. And second: this text exists in multiple forms. There are several versions in Spanish of this text, and the English version is not exactly the same as Spanish version, and Estonian version, too, has one additional being from Estonian literature. However, the imagery of mythological creatures may be culture-specific, that could make comparing visuals presented by people with different cultural background who have read different versions of the text extremely interesting.
Thus this project was born – for collecting visual representations of Borges’s imaginary beings.
